In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious,The Most Merciful, it gives me great pleasure to send this message from the bottom of my heart. We bear witness to hearing from all three of you, seeing from you and believing in you. It’s been decades, arguably since the First Republic of our great but devastated nation that is considered as a failed state by so many of it’s citizens which will imminently be divided between ethnic, religious and political lines if appropriate measures are not put in place.
The Forefathers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria must be rolling in their graves due to the current situation of the country to the extent that they will probably choose to go back to the after life if given a chance by God Almighty to be resurrected and see what their efforts and sacrifices made by them have become. The leaders that have taken the mantle of leaderships since their demise failed to carryout the dream of a Federal Republic of Nigeria. The actions of both the leaders and the citizenry no longer gives credence to what the nation’s National Anthem, the National Flag and the nation’s Coat of Arms that stands for unity, peace and harmony.
His Excellency, Professor Zulum the Great has by all means transformed the perspective of the Nigerian citizenry in all aspects of leadership. His determination to depict true qualities of what a leader should be has earned him the highest respect across the country.
It is arguable that the present Governor of Borno State is indeed more popular and admired than the President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR). His diligence and persistence with regard to official duties ranges from “honesty and integrity, confidence, commitment and passion, decision making capabilities, accountability, delegation and empowerment, creativity and innovation, empathy, resilience, emotional intelligence, humility and humbleness, transparency, vision and purpose, welfare and good communication with State Government Officials and the general public.
It is imperative for a leader to clearly communicate his vision, wisdom and ideology with his team and supporters. It is equally paramount to share the strategy required in achieving the goal and primary objective. Contrary to such elements, it will be unequivocally impossible to achieve the results needed to succeed.
A good communicator always makes a great leader as words have the power to motivate people and make them achieve the unimaginable. Likewise, impediment of communication can easily destroy the dream. “He who is patient will make a good leader, and he who controls his anger shall be great”. A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way (John C Maxwell). To quote Sarmad Hassan, “As a leader, you cannot do everything right”.
It is important for a leader to focus on key responsibilities while leaving the rest to others such as empowering your followers and delegating tasks to them. If you continue to micromanage your subordinates, it will develop a lack of trust and most importantly, you will not be able to focus on important matters as should be the case. A leader has to delegate tasks to his subordinates for enhancing performance to an optimal level. Provide them with all the resources and the necessary support needed to achieve the objectives by giving them a chance to bear their responsibilities.
His Excellency, Governor Babagana Umar Zulum of Borno State has proven his capacity as a true leader, with his dedication and efforts which has given Northern Nigeria and Southern Nigeria hope to a larger extent by tirelessly working round the clock as witnessed by all and sundry. His style of governance is indeed worthy of emulation by other leaders across the globe. From payment of salaries to workers, exposing corruption and collection of bribery by officials of both State and Armed Forces to Youth empowerment, taking terrorism head on, exposing Ghost Workers in the civil service, health and educational sectors, participation in executing official duties in person across all Local Government Areas in Borno State, acceleration of building infrastructural facilities.
The vibrant, humble and intellectually proven Professor should kindly consider not to run for any other office come 2023 general elections apart from seeking a second term in office as Governor of his state that he sacrificed so much for during his few months in office as the Chief Security Officer of Borno State. By rejecting an offer by a man that intended to walk all the way to Borno State to honour him as a new and pointless trend in Nigerian politics, where he told the person to pray for the state instead, speaks volumes with regard to his undisputed good character and sense of responsibility. He is clearly a leader that is not out to acquire popularity, but to lead and show the essence of true leadership.
The only two Governors in Northern Nigeria that could be closely compared to Governor Zulum of Borno State are,” His Excellency, Governor Nasiru El’Rufai,(Executive Governor, Kaduna State,The Master Developer and Game Changer). A man of distinctive character who knows no boundaries when it comes to achieving excellence in all spheres of governance. From infrastructural development to being a team player in selecting and working with the best amongst the youths by empowerment and mentorship in grooming future leaders with visual certainty of sight by all who care to catch a glimpse of the new Kaduna State under his leadership. Despite the setback with regards to funding state projects during his first tenure as Governor of Kaduna State,Governor El’Rufa’i has achieved the impossible by equating the developmental spectrum in the state with progress. Against all odds, he has made up for what he couldn’t achieve in his first tenure and will by the grace of God Almighty achieve 100 time what he intended to achieve within his last few years in office when analyzing the pace at which his government is accelerating in terms of new innovations and development across the state.
His Excellency, Governor Bello Matawalle,(Executive Governor, Zamfara State),The Peace Maker) took every one by surprise despite immense stumbling blocks by the opposition parties with his swift achievement in restoring peace to Zamfara State which was once a no go area devastated by banditry, kidnappings and killing of innocent souls by the hundreds on daily bases for years. His developmental initiatives on housing, Ruga ranches, payment of Salaries and welfare for the less privileged under a Charity Foundation established by the Governor called “BELMAT FOUNDATION” where the beneficiaries are screened and their class level is confirmed before funds are channeled to people in need. The Governor’s initiatives for the less privileged in Zamfara State is equally worthy of commendation with high hopes of sustainability.
The leadership qualities of the three Governors in the 19 northern states gives hope and serves as a beacon of light at the end of a dark tunnel persevered in the most disastrous decade in the history of Nigeria. The future of the country is no longer as bleak as it was prior to the 2019 general elections and the younger generation will hopefully have a prosperous legacy to build on when their time comes to take over the mantle of leadership.
There is a need for such leaders to lay a foundation for the generation to come once they are voted into office in order to lead in both state and federal level of governance.
May Allah SWA continue to bless, guide and protect us with His infinite wisdom and mercy.
Amin Ya Rahman.
